Toronto People & Respect Slang

This is relationship vocabulary — how people in the GTA refer to friends, crews, and showing respect.

• Big Up — To show respect, give credit, or hype someone up. Literally "to big yourself/someone up."
• Blessed — A catch-all positive response — used as a greeting, a farewell, or a reaction to good news. When plans are locked in, they're "blessed."
• Bredren — A close friend or brother — a term of real loyalty and trust, above casual friendship.
• Brodie / Crodie — Brother, friend, day-one. Popularized by Toronto rap and now used well outside music circles.
• Fam — Close friend or crew — used the way "family" is used, but for people you're actually close with day to day.
• Link Up / Linking — To meet up or hang out with someone — in a romantic context, it can mean seeing or dating someone casually.
• Man Dem — Originally Jamaican Patois for "those men" or "my people." In Toronto it's used loosely for your crew or group of friends, regardless of who's actually in it.
• Mans — Used as a stand-in for "I" or "me" — a self-referential term believed to come from Jamaican Patois as spoken in Toronto's Caribbean communities. The whole "Toronto mans" identity is built around this word.
• Nuff Respect — "Thank you" or "I appreciate that," delivered with real sincerity. "Nuff" here means "enough," as in "plenty."
• One Love — A greeting or farewell rooted in reggae culture, expressing unity and goodwill.
• Roadman — Someone street-smart, always out and about, who knows how things really work on the ground — not a compliment or an insult on its own, just a description.
• Safe — Used as an acknowledgment or a casual goodbye — similar to saying "cool" or "take care."
• Ting — Literally "thing" in Patois, but used constantly for a romantic interest ("my ting") or just to refer to an unspecified person, object or situation.
• Wasteman / Waste Yute — Someone lazy, unmotivated or generally useless — a "waste yute" is the younger version of the same insult.
• Youts — Young people, or your friends/crew — a Patois-rooted pronunciation of "youths" that stuck as its own word.
