Waste Yute

An insult for someone seen as immature, useless, or squandering their potential — literally "a waste of a young person." A sharper cousin of "wasteman" that specifically calls out someone still young enough that it's especially disappointing.

How it's used

This is the vocabulary for when something, or someone, isn't hitting right.

“Quit acting like a waste yute and get a job.”

Where it comes from

Origin: Combines Caribbean patois "yute" (youth) with "waste"; often traced to the Rexdale area of Toronto. It's one of many Toronto terms that trace back to Jamaican Patois, brought into the city through Toronto's Caribbean communities. Read the fuller story in our history of Toronto slang.
