The Art Gallery of Ontario holds the largest public collection of work by British sculptor Henry Moore anywhere in the world, an unusual concentration for a gallery outside the artist's home country. The relationship began in the 1960s when Toronto purchased Moore's large bronze sculpture The Archer for Nathan Phillips Square, a acquisition that impressed Moore enough to open a dialogue with the city's gallery.
A gift steered away from London
Moore had originally intended a major gift of his work for a planned gallery in London, but after a falling-out over that project's direction, he redirected a substantial donation of sculptures, drawings and plaster studies to the AGO instead, dramatically expanding what had started as a single public commission into the world's largest Moore collection. The gallery built a dedicated Henry Moore Sculpture Centre to house the collection, giving Toronto an internationally significant holding of a major 20th-century sculptor's work almost by accident of a London gallery dispute.
