The Yonge Street 'Longest Street' Myth

For decades, a frequently repeated piece of Toronto trivia held that Yonge Street was, according to Guinness World Records, the longest street in the world, running some 1,896 kilometres from the shore of Lake Ontario all the way north to the Ontario-Minnesota border. The figure entered popular culture and tourism materials as a point of local pride, and generations of Torontonians grew up citing it as settled fact.

A road built from two different roads

The claim rested on treating Yonge Street as continuous with Highway 11, the provincial highway that Yonge Street feeds into north of the city, even though the two were legally and administratively distinct roads built and numbered separately. Once that distinction was properly scrutinized, Guinness quietly dropped Yonge Street from its records in the 1990s, and Toronto's own municipal Yonge Street, from the harbour to the city's northern boundary, measures a comparatively modest stretch. The "world's longest street" claim nonetheless remains one of the most persistent pieces of Toronto trivia, still repeated by tour guides and locals decades after Guinness stopped recognizing it.
