The Toronto Wolfpack

The Toronto Wolfpack launched in 2017 as a genuinely unusual experiment: a Toronto-based professional rugby league team competing not in a North American league, since none existed at a suitable level, but in Britain's rugby league system, flying across the Atlantic for away matches against English and Welsh clubs. It became the first transatlantic professional sports team in a major team sport, playing home games at Lamport Stadium in Toronto's Liberty Village area.

A rapid rise, and a pandemic collapse

The Wolfpack won promotion through England's rugby league divisions in successive seasons, reaching the sport's top tier, the Super League, by 2020 — a remarkably fast climb for a new club. That momentum collapsed almost immediately: the COVID-19 pandemic's travel restrictions made the team's transatlantic model unworkable, and ownership withdrew the club from the season partway through 2020, ultimately folding the franchise entirely rather than continuing under the financial strain the pandemic created.
