Toronto Western Hospital was founded in 1896 by a group of physicians, many practicing homeopathic medicine, who had been effectively excluded from the city's existing medical establishment centred on Toronto General Hospital. It opened on Toronto's west side to serve a growing working-class and immigrant population in that part of the city, positioning itself from the start as an alternative to the more established downtown institutions.
A leading neurosurgery centre
Toronto Western built a strong reputation through the 20th century in neurosurgery and neurology in particular, developing into one of the leading centres in Canada for treating brain and spine conditions, alongside a broad general hospital mandate. It has been part of the University Health Network since that network's formation, alongside Toronto General and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and remains one of downtown Toronto's major teaching hospitals.
