The Toronto Sign was installed at Nathan Phillips Square in 2015 as part of the city's hosting of the Pan American and Parapan American Games, giant illuminated block letters spelling out TORONTO, originally intended as temporary event signage and photo backdrop for Games visitors and athletes. It immediately became one of the most photographed spots in the city, with lines of tourists and locals alike waiting to take pictures in front of it throughout the Games.
From temporary prop to permanent landmark
The sign's popularity was significant enough that City Council voted to make it a permanent fixture rather than remove it once the Games ended, later upgrading it with programmable LED lighting that changes colour for different causes, holidays and civic occasions throughout the year. What began as disposable event branding became one of Toronto's most recognizable and heavily used photo landmarks, a rare case of temporary Games infrastructure outliving its original purpose by years.
