Relocated from Hamilton in 1999 and installed at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Toronto Rock won the National Lacrosse League championship in their first season in the city — and never really stopped winning.

The Toronto Rock's franchise history begins in 1998 as the Ontario Raiders, based in Hamilton — the first Canadian-based franchise in the National Lacrosse League. A group of investors purchased the franchise and relocated it to Toronto for the 1999 season, renaming it the Toronto Rock and installing it at Maple Leaf Gardens.
Instant success
The Rock made an immediate splash: in their first season in Toronto they won the NLL championship, defeating the Rochester Knighthawks 13–10 in the deciding game — played at Maple Leaf Gardens. Box lacrosse itself has deep Toronto-area roots as Canada's historic indoor summer game, giving the Rock's arrival a receptive, pre-existing local fan base rather than a cold start.
A decorated run
Over the following decades the Rock built one of the NLL's most decorated résumés, winning a total of seven league championships, tied for the most in NLL history. The team has played home games at Maple Leaf Gardens, Scotiabank Arena, and, from 2021 onward, at the Coca-Cola Coliseum — reflecting the same MLSE-adjacent arena ecosystem that has shaped much of Toronto's modern pro-sports landscape.
