Toronto FC spent much of its first decade as one of Major League Soccer's weaker franchises, missing the playoffs in nearly every season after its 2007 founding. That changed dramatically by the mid-2010s, built around designated players Sebastian Giovinco, Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore, culminating in a 2017 season that stands as one of the best in league history: Toronto FC won the Canadian Championship, then the Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record, then the MLS Cup itself, a clean sweep of all three trophies no MLS team has matched before or since.
A record-setting campaign
Toronto FC set a single-season MLS points record that year, and its MLS Cup Final win, a rematch against the Seattle Sounders who had beaten Toronto in the previous year's final on penalties, was played in near-blizzard conditions at BMO Field in front of the club's home fans. The 2017 treble remains the high-water mark of the franchise's history and one of the standout achievements in North American professional soccer.
