Thorncliffe Park

Thorncliffe Park occupies the former site of the Thorncliffe Park Raceway, a horse racing track that operated in the Don Valley area through the early-to-mid 20th century before closing in the 1950s to make way for residential development. The neighbourhood that replaced it was built largely as a planned apartment community, similar in concept to nearby Flemingdon Park, with a dense cluster of high-rise towers set within a self-contained road loop rather than a conventional street grid connecting through to surrounding areas.

One of Toronto's densest immigrant hubs

Thorncliffe Park became, over the following decades, one of Toronto's most densely populated neighbourhoods and a major settlement hub for South Asian immigrants in particular, with the area's schools among the most overcrowded in the Toronto District School Board as a result. Its dense apartment population and relative affordability made it a consistent entry point for new Canadians, giving the neighbourhood a distinct identity built around South Asian shops, restaurants and community institutions concentrated within its self-contained road loop.
