Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre opened in 1948 on land that had previously been part of the Sunnybrook estate, now also home to Sunnybrook Park, built specifically to provide long-term care for the large number of Canadian veterans returning from the Second World War with serious injuries and conditions requiring specialized, ongoing medical treatment. Its scale reflected the sheer number of veterans the postwar system needed to care for, well beyond what existing Toronto hospitals could absorb.
From veterans' hospital to trauma leader
As the veteran population it was built to serve aged, Sunnybrook broadened into a full general hospital and major teaching institution affiliated with the University of Toronto, developing into one of the busiest trauma centres in Canada and a leading site for care after serious accidents and emergencies across the Greater Toronto Area. It remains one of the largest hospitals in the country, its original veterans-focused mission now just one part of a much broader mandate spanning trauma, cancer care, women's health and general medicine.
