Sarah Polley

Sarah Polley was born in Toronto in 1979 into a show-business family and began acting as a child, gaining wide recognition for her role in the Canadian television series Road to Avonlea and later for her performance in Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter (1997). Polley grew increasingly uneasy with the industry's treatment of child performers and gradually shifted her focus away from acting and toward filmmaking as she entered adulthood.

From acting to directing

Polley's directorial debut, Away from Her (2006), earned her an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay, and she went on to direct Take This Waltz (2011) and the deeply personal documentary Stories We Tell (2012), which examined secrets within her own family. Her adaptation of Miriam Toews's novel Women Talking (2022) won her the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2023, cementing her transition from a well-known Canadian child actress into one of the more acclaimed directors of her generation.
