The Ryerson Image Centre

The Ryerson Image Centre opened in 2012 on the Toronto Metropolitan University campus, built around the university's acquisition of the Black Star photojournalism archive, a collection of roughly 292,000 prints spanning decades of 20th-century photojournalism from one of the most significant American photo agencies of the era. That single acquisition gave the university's existing photography program the foundation for a genuinely major public research collection almost overnight.

A dedicated home for photography

The centre combines public exhibition galleries with archival research space, giving Toronto a dedicated public museum specifically for the history and practice of photography, a genre often folded into broader art museums rather than given its own dedicated institution. The Ryerson Image Centre has continued expanding its holdings and exhibition programming since opening, positioning itself as a significant photography-focused institution within Toronto's broader museum landscape.
