The Rotman School of Management

The University of Toronto's business school existed for decades as a respectable but unremarkable program before businessman and philanthropist Joseph Rotman made a major donation in 1997 that funded both a new building and a broader strategic overhaul of the school's ambitions. Rotman, who had built his fortune in energy trading and investment, wanted the gift used specifically to elevate the school's research profile and international standing rather than simply expanding its existing operations.

A rapid rise in the rankings

Renamed the Rotman School of Management, the school used the gift to recruit prominent faculty and expand its MBA and research programs substantially, climbing steadily in international business school rankings over the following two decades to become widely regarded as one of the top business schools in Canada. Rotman's gift is frequently cited as a case study in how a single, strategically directed donation can reshape an academic institution's trajectory far more than incremental funding increases typically manage to.
