Peter Gzowski

Peter Gzowski worked as a print journalist and magazine editor before moving into broadcasting with the CBC in Toronto, eventually taking over the weekday morning radio program Morningside in 1982. He hosted the show for nearly two decades, building a loose, conversational interviewing style that let guests, from prime ministers to unknown authors to ordinary Canadians with an interesting story, speak at length rather than in tightly controlled soundbites.

A daily ritual for a generation of listeners

Morningside became appointment listening for a large share of English Canada through the 1980s and 90s, with Gzowski's unhurried, curious on-air manner making him one of the most trusted voices in Canadian broadcasting. He stepped away from the show in 1997 and continued other broadcasting and writing work until his death in 2002, remembered as one of the defining figures of CBC Radio's golden era, broadcasting out of Toronto to the entire country each weekday morning.
