Oakville

Oakville, on Lake Ontario west of Mississauga, is one of the wealthiest towns in the Greater Toronto Area today — a reputation built gradually from a 19th-century timber-and-shipping fortune rather than modern suburban development alone.

Founded on a timber deal (1827)

Colonel William Chisholm founded Oakville in 1827, purchasing 960 acres of Crown land at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek for $4,116. The town's name itself comes from "White Oak," a name given to Chisholm by local Indigenous traders because of his extensive dealings in that specific timber. He built a harbour, gristmill and sawmill, and the town grew quickly into a genuine shipbuilding and trade centre.

Summer estates become permanent addresses

In the early 20th century, wealthy Torontonians who could commute to the city by train began building large summer homes along the Lakeshore — estates that gradually became year-round residences, laying the groundwork for the town's affluent reputation well before modern suburban development arrived.

Growth and identity today

Oakville was incorporated as a town in 1857 and absorbed Trafalgar Township in a 1962 amalgamation, becoming, by its own claim, the largest town by area in Canada. Unlike Mississauga or Brampton, Oakville has retained a smaller-town, higher-income identity even as the surrounding GTA has grown dramatically around it.
