Nuit Blanche Toronto held its inaugural edition on the night of September 30, 2006, as an all-night, free, city-produced celebration of contemporary art staged across downtown streets, public spaces and cultural institutions. It drew an estimated 425,000 people in its very first year.
Rapid growth
Attendance nearly doubled the following year — by its second edition in 2007, roughly 800,000 people took part, signalling that the event had quickly become a fixture of the city's cultural calendar. The event is produced by the City of Toronto in partnership with the local arts community, with new curators, themes and artist rosters each year. Since 2006, the event has featured close to 1,800 art installations by approximately 6,350 artists, with organizers estimating it has generated more than $550 million in cumulative economic impact for the city.
