Nightwood Theatre

Nightwood Theatre was founded in Toronto in 1979 by a group of women working in Canadian theatre who were frustrated by how few opportunities existed for female playwrights, directors and performers to have their work produced on major stages, at a time when Canadian theatre programming, like most of the industry, skewed heavily male both onstage and behind the scenes. The company organized specifically around producing and developing work by and about women.

A lasting institution

Nightwood built ongoing programs to support emerging women playwrights and directors, functioning as both a producing theatre and a development pipeline for talent that might otherwise have struggled to break into Toronto's broader theatre scene. The company has remained active for over four decades, one of the longest-running theatre companies in Canada built specifically around gender equity in an industry that has only slowly addressed the disparities Nightwood was founded to counter.
