Michie Mee

Michie Mee, born Michelle McCulloch, grew up in Toronto and began performing hip hop in the city's early scene in the mid-1980s, at a time when Canadian hip hop had essentially no infrastructure connecting it to the American industry that dominated the genre. She built a reputation on Toronto's club and battle circuit before catching the attention of American label executives, an unusual path for a Canadian artist in a period when American labels rarely looked north for talent.

A door opened for Canadian hip hop

Michie Mee signed with First Priority Music, an American label, in the late 1980s, becoming the first Canadian hip hop artist signed to a major U.S. label, alongside collaborator LA Luv. That deal predated the broader wave of Toronto rappers who would later find mainstream American success by decades, and Michie Mee is widely credited by later Canadian hip hop artists as a foundational figure who proved a Canadian MC could compete on the American industry's own terms.
