George Chuvalo

George Chuvalo was born in Toronto in 1937 to Croatian immigrant parents and grew up in the city's working-class west end, turning professional as a heavyweight boxer as a teenager. He built a career fighting virtually every top heavyweight of his era, including two bouts against Muhammad Ali, in 1966 and 1972, both of which went the full distance, an outcome few of Ali's opponents managed against a fighter at the peak of his powers.

Never knocked down

Chuvalo's defining claim in boxing history is that across a professional career spanning decades and dozens of fights against elite opposition, he was never once knocked off his feet, a durability record that made him a figure of particular respect among fellow boxers even when he lost on points. He never won a world title, fighting in an era stacked with historically great heavyweights, but remained a beloved Toronto sports figure for decades after retiring, later becoming a prominent anti-drug advocate following the deaths of several of his own children from addiction.
