The 1976 Canada Cup

The 1976 Canada Cup, held September 2–15, 1976, was the first best-on-best international hockey tournament to include NHL professionals alongside the top players from Europe and the Soviet Union. Six national teams competed in a round-robin format across host cities including Toronto, with the top two finishers advancing to a best-of-three final.

Toronto's games

Maple Leaf Gardens hosted several pivotal matches, including Canada's wins over Sweden and the Soviet Union in the round robin. Most significantly, Game 1 of the best-of-three final between Canada and Czechoslovakia was played at Maple Leaf Gardens on September 13, 1976, with Canada winning 6–0 en route to sweeping the two-game final.

Bobby Orr's last great stage

Team Canada finished atop the standings and won the tournament outright. Bobby Orr, playing what would prove to be effectively his final competitive hockey given the knee injuries that soon ended his career, was named tournament MVP — giving the 1976 Canada Cup a bittersweet historical weight as one of the last showcases of Orr near his peak. The tournament's success led directly to four more Canada Cup events, establishing the format that eventually evolved into the modern World Cup of Hockey.
